In order to teach the STEM Academy students the importance of clear and concise communication, they created graham cracker houses - while blindfolded!

The students and I were lucky to have a visit from NC State professor Dr. DeLeon Gray and two of his associates!

Please click the above to watch 7th grader Cale'f Mack's winning STEM Academy Powtoon!! It's a new school year and a new year of STEM Academy!
This year we have started a new project called Genius Hour. Genius Hour is based upon Google's 20% time for employees. For my Scholars it means that 20% of their time (every Friday) is devoted to researching a topic they are passionate about and finding a divergent and creative way to present it to the class (TED talk, movie, etc.). Two of my 8th graders share a passion for computers and want to build one from scratch. They wrote a proposal for Senator Howard Lee to fund their project and he presented them with a check! So proud of Roi and Collin for their initiative! I'm excited to announce that Lowe's Grove STEM Academy will be working with with the Duke Lemur Center next school year! The STEM Scholars will be studying, visiting, and collaborating all year long.
Once again, our STEM Scholars will become published writers! A few days ago we finished our book and it has been sent to the publisher. Each of my 46 students wrote a chapter for the book. Very excited!! Photos will be forthcoming!
Our 8th grade STEM Academy scholars have been learning all about "worms and germs" from a doctor from Duke! Dr. William Parker, an expert in bacteria from Duke, is a visiting professor for our 8th graders. He has been sharing his knowledge over the course of a series of lessons. This is quite an honor and the scholars are enjoying it tremendously - especially since 1/4 of the students are interested in pursuing careers in the field of medicine. :-)
Today the STEM Academy students had their final speeches in the "Hunger in America" contest. I was tremendously proud of them!
